Key Findings

The Community Safety Consultation produced a top three safety concerns in Shirehampton;

1. Road Safety

2. Litter

3. Young People related issues.

Background

This public consultation had been attempted once before with an extremely low response. Therefore, this second attempted needed to be accessible to more people. The reports main aim was to discover what the residents of Shirehampton perceived as their three main concerns for their own safety. It was also hoped that the report would show how the development of SCAF and it’s related projects has impacted and changed the community. There hasn’t been a consultation of this sort since early 2001 where the previous community worker produced a community profile addressing a number of concerns and areas for development within Shirehampton. A consultation of this sort was needed to see how Shirehampton has developed and to see how perceptions have changed. As already stated it was important that this consultation was accessible to as many residence of Shirehampton as possible, this is our target audience.

Methods

The main aspect of this consultation involved a short questionnaire asking participants to name the top three safety concerns within Shirehampton. To make this even more accessible to everyone two large maps were also produced, one satellite picture of Shirehampton and one street map. These maps were used with a number of coloured stickers which were placed on the maps to represent areas of different safety concerns.

The consultation was taken to Penpole Tenants Association, Shire Link, Cotswold Ladies Group, Shirehampton Library and Shirehampton Health Centre. The consultation was accessible to approximately 140 participants, of which 50%apx responded.
