ACTION FORUM FUNDING BOOST

Shirehampton Community Action Forum (SCAF) was officially launched in June this year, after establishing itself as an independent organisation – previously the project was supported and managed by the Shirehampton Public Hall Community Association following SCAFs inaugural meeting in October 2001. The Forum brings together a wide range of local voluntary and statutory organisations, who work in partnership to advance social welfare, community safety, housing, health, education, the environment, expand positive awareness of the area, and leisure-time occupations.

The Forum has been awarded two grants to support its community work. Connexions West of England has placed a contract with the Forum to deliver the Positive Activities for Young People (PAYP) programme of holiday activities locally. Connexions aims to give every young person the best start in life and enable them to participate effectively in their communities through active citizenship, learning and employment, including those young people who are in greatest need through disadvantage, disaffection or economic or social exclusion. The Forum will work closely with Portway Community School, the Police based at Avonmouth, BCC Young Peoples Services and other local partners.

The Forum has set up a number of Action Groups. These cover Youth Support, Community Safety, and Housing. Shirehampton Greens deals with environmental issues. At the last count, 37 organisations have participated in the work of the Forum or at least one of the Action Groups. The cross-fertilisation between groups and individuals working in the Forum has been very productive. Greater Bristol Foundation has recently awarded the Forum a Neighbourhood Renewal ‘Pockets’ grant to support all these activities.

Forum Chairman Dr David Thomas said “I am delighted that these two funding bodies have recognised the contribution which the Forum can make to the Shirehampton community, so soon after it has been launched. We hope that the PAYP programme will continue in future years. It will help to fill the gap in provision for young people which has occurred since Groveleaze Youth Club in Shirehampton closed.”

If you would like to join SCAF, or to get more information on the details of the holiday programme, and availability of places, please ring Ash Bearman, Community Development Officer on 0117 982 9963, or email her on ash@shirepubhall.org.uk.
