Shirehampton Community Action Forum (SCAF)
is holding a LAUNCH PARTY from 6.30 to 8.30 pm, on Thursday 26 June 2003, at
Shirehampton Public Hall, Station Rd, Shirehampton, Bristol.
The Forum was established by the
Shirehampton Public Hall Association, to bring together a wide range of local voluntary
and statutory organisations. These will work in partnership
to advance social welfare, community safety, housing, health, education, the environment,
expand positive awareness of the area, and leisure-time occupations.
The
Forum has set up a number of Action Groups. These cover Youth Support, Community Safety,
and Housing. Shirehampton Greens deals with environmental issues. At the last count, 37
organisations have participated in the work of the Forum or at least one of the Action
Groups. The cross-fertilisation between groups and individuals working in the Forum has
been very productive.
The Forum has been sufficiently successful that it has now been set
up as an organisation in its own right. The Forums Chairman, Dr David Thomas, said
I am delighted that the Forum has attracted sufficient support that it can become a
permanent organisation. The close collaboration between the Police, various departments of
the City Council, local churches, schools, and residents, can have a real impact on some
of the concerns that residents noted when we compiled a Community Profile recently.
The Forum has been supported throughout by community worker Ash Bearman. Ash said We hope that our launch will increase awareness of the work SCAF is doing locally. The more local organisations that we can bring together, the greater effect we can have on local concerns about community safety, provision of services for young people, housing problems, and the development of a community park.
